The Brooch is Back!
Yes, it's true! The brooch is hot on the runways. Vintage beauties are being broken out of the glass case at the Designer Jewelry Museum. Hot new brooch designs imbued with a modern ethos are also popping up. Heads up to shops that carry brooches -- business may be brisk! But it helps to know what type of brooch is in. And how they are being worn.
The brooch has been spotted in design lines as diverse as Balenciaga, Prada and Chanel. The trend is still big -- statement necklaces may or may not be on losing popularity, but big is definitely still in. Opulence and over-the-top excess have been the rule in design for several years now. There is no sign of it slowing down.
Some of these pieces have such a familiar look to them it feels like old home week. There is a timelessness to figural pieces and certain shapes and stone types. A picture is worth a thousand words ......
Renaissance Styles
Flowery jewelry, lace, a mix of the late Middle Ages and Renaissance styles -- although to be honest it's hard to tell if this is a real trend or just part of certain designers' runway themes. That said, flowers and lace are always good sellers. See some of the floral confections passing as necklaces. Dolce and Gabbana, befitting their Italian roots, is out front with romantic, very feminine pieces.
Big and Bold Everything
I bought a new sweater online last week -- and when I got it I was very surprised to see those old friends from the 1980s attached to it -- shoulder pads! 80s excess is seen in jewelry and clothing. This isn't exactly news breaking -- but some designers are specifically re-working 1980s' jewelry styles for the 21st century. It's just a matter of time before Big Hair makes a comeback. Big is definitely in -- but thankfully only Givenchy is using the entire face as a jeweled depository! Every picture tells a story.
Statement Necklaces
While some fashion writers have hinted that the statement necklace is on the wane, the trend is nowhere near over. Indeed some necklaces are so big one wonders how the wearer keeps her collarbones from breaking! From modernist chunky affairs to lacy, renaissance froth, it seems if a material can circle a neck, it can be worn as a necklace. Lace is most becoming and in tune with some softer fabrics and romantic styles that always seem to be in fashion.
Heavy metal isn't just a rock and roll genre. Some necklaces look like massive chunks and bars of gold! Perhaps the designer broke into Fort Knox. These pieces will be downsized and restrained now that the fall line is in traditional retail stores. Since all of fashion is iterative it isn't hard to find vintage pieces that are also big, becoming and marketable.
The 1980s was a great decade for big, clavicle breaking necklaces. Vintage inspiration can be found there -- and of course the 1950s when everything was big and meant to cause a stir.
Looking for large attention grabbing vintage jewelry? Pieces from the 1940s, 1950s and 1980s will all work with the 2015 fall and winter trends. And remember trendy isn't everything. Plenty of women want a more demure and classic look -- one of the reasons they shop for vintage jewelry anyway -- to escape broken clavicles. Any seasoned shop owner knows by now what best sells for them -- it just doesn't hurt to know what is happening in Paris, Milan and New York.
